Firm Profile: John Cannings, Barristers
Our firm started as a sole practice in 1978 with a strong background in insurance litigation. As the firm
grew in size, we have diversified our practice and are now involved in cases representing a full spectrum of civil litigation
, with an emphasis on insurance defence litigation, professional liability and personal injury law. Our clients include both
individuals and commercial and financial enterprises, ranging in size and complexity from small businesses to multinational
companies. They include some of Canada's foremost corporations, insurers and professional associations.
The firm and its lawyers also have a strong background in fire losses, fidelity insurance, defence of construction related losses, fire losses, wrongful dismissal, medical malpractice and libel and slander.
Our firm and its lawyers have been responsible for numerous ground breaking decisions, some of which have changed the landscape of insurance litigation and medical malpractice.
We appear regularly before trial and appellate courts of all levels. We believe, however, that litigation is not always the most effective way of resolving disputes. In appropriate cases, we recommend and represent clients in a variety of alternative dispute resolution forums, such as mediation, arbitration and neutral evaluation.
Our senior lawyers are experienced litigators and negotiators and are the counsel of choice for a number of insurers.
Our firm is committed to continuing legal education. We also provide seminars and lectures to insurer clients.
We are committed to pursuing timely and cost effective resolutions of matters. We keep abreast of technical innovations including computer assisted document management systems and computer assisted research tools.
